Botanical Garden
The Botanical Garden is a green island in the Nile at Aswan, filled with plants from around the world. It is reached by felucca.
Kitchener’s island
The island is often called Kitchener Island after Lord Kitchener, the British commander who owned it in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He collected exotic plants here from Africa and Asia. The Egyptian state later took over the collection and opened it as a botanical garden.
Palms and shade on the water
Shaded paths lead between palms and flowering trees from several continents, in sharp contrast to the desert cliffs on the far bank. The crossing is part of the pleasure: under the white sail of a felucca, the garden comes slowly into view among the granite boulders of the Nile at Aswan.
After the desert and the granite, a felucca carries you to an island of deep green shade.
