Esna Lock

The Esna Lock is a crucial part of navigating the Nile River, especially for the many cruise ships that travel between Luxor and Aswan. Located near the town of Esna, about 55 kilometers south of Luxor, it allows vessels to safely traverse the difference in water levels caused by the Esna Barrage.

Passing the Esna Barrage

The barrage was constructed to manage the Nile’s flow, and the lock enables river traffic to pass through it. Without the lock, boats would be unable to navigate the height difference created by the structure. The gates close behind the ship, the water level in the chamber changes, and the vessel continues at the level of the river ahead.

A barrage of the early twentieth century

The original Esna Barrage and lock were completed in the early twentieth century, and the structure was upgraded in the 1990s to improve its capacity and efficiency. The barrage plays a vital role in managing the Nile’s water, which is essential for agriculture in the surrounding regions.
